Hello,
Sober October is in full swing and the business of sobriety continues to gain momentum. Both alcoholic Guinness and non-alcoholic Guinness are piled high at the supermarket checkout, giving you the illusion of making a worthy decision when really you are just deciding to buy Guinness.
One of the touted benefits of not drinking is that you save money, so many people are outraged to discover that a pint of non-alcoholic beer is basically the same price as the real thing. “Outrageous, it’s not even being taxed,” you say to your friends once you’ve finished discussing how great not drinking is, seven days into not drinking.
There are a couple of reasons that everything from pretend gin to blue beer (why is that the default colour?) is so expensive. There is an element of added cost to the makers. It requires different yeasts, a separate process and high-quality ingredients. No one wants to drink 0% Glens. People also drink less, it would be quite odd to have ten pints of non-alcoholic lager. In fact, it is quite odd to have ten pints of alcoholic lager but it remains a popular pastime nonetheless. Ultimately they can charge a similar amount - people will pay a premium because it feels like the ‘right’ decision.
I do wonder as I make my caffeine-free tea after having my alcohol-free Guinness whether there is a danger of living a fun-free life in the name of good health. I guess there’s a time and place for it (e.g. Tuesday evening when you’ve got to be up at the crack of dawn) but it’s all part of the human experience to have the odd massively uncalled-for espresso martini at 10 pm.
In vino veritas,

Thorpe Park apologies for blaring spooky noises all night 👻 - I enjoy Fright Night as much as the next person but I can see why it might be a bit alarming to have to listen to that sort of thing as you’re going to sleep. Local residents were forced to listen to ‘ghostly wailing’ all night after park employees forgot to turn it off.
Gen Z are flocking to LinkedIn 📇 - the young guns are putting their social media prowess to work on the career-focussed platform. It’s generally got a better vibe than most other platforms ( it’s all ‘congrats on the new job!’). However, I am constantly staggered by the number of people who decide to post incendiary comments just under their job title. It feels more productive than TikTok and some have even taken to using it as a dating app (including some foreign intelligence services).
Northern European broadcasters are banding together to take on streaming 📽️ - New8 is a group of eight public broadcasters from Scandinavia, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium who will work together to produce content. A massive boon for lovers of moody Nordic dramas where someone gets killed somewhere cold.
Noise-cancelling headphone market is expected to triple by 2031 🎧 - the outside world is pretty bleak so it's no surprise everyone is trying to drown it out with silence. However, research is showing there is a lot to lose both from a safety and social perspective. Turns out ear-whigging other people’s conversations at work is super helpful for all the obvious reasons. Clearly being able to hear the articulated lorry you’re about to step in front of is also marginally beneficial.
Sam Bankman-Friend accused of ‘scoffing’ at ex’s testimony 🥴 - I thought scoffing was purely the preserve of Horrid Henry but no, SBF’s lawyer was asked to have a word with him after he made derisive noises during the trial. Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison presided over a heady mix of crypto options trading using client deposits, polygamy and amphetamines whilst running FTX and Alameda Research respectively.
Microsoft completes takeover of Activision 🕹️ - the deal was initially announced at the beginning of 2022 but the Competitions & Market Authority put the kibosh on it due to concerns that Microsoft would abuse their newfound dominance. Having agreed to sell streaming rights to their games, it has been waved through, instantly giving Microsoft $3bn of mobile game revenue.
Billionaire who gave away all his money dies aged 92 💰 - Charles Feeney who owned the Duty Free Shoppers empire passed away on Monday having donated all but $2 million of his fortune. His donations supported the Northern Ireland peace process, the abolition of the death penalty in the US and the modernisation of the Vietnamese healthcare system amongst many other causes. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos has just bought a new mansion for $79million. It is next door to his other mansion which he purchased two months ago for $68million.
Weird weather is delaying early Christmas food sales 🎄 - normally people are starting to stock up on Christmas puddings and stuff by now but the unseasonably warm weather has meant people are holding off as no one is realistically going to be thinking about crackers in their shorts. Burgers are flying off the shelves.
AI industry could use as much energy as the Netherlands ⚡ - whilst it has the potential to do a lot of good (and bad) the amount of computing required is enormous which could end up requiring vast amounts of electricity. It emphasises the interdependencies of technologies for us to have any chance of digging ourselves out of the hole in which we find ourselves.
It might be worth using Gen AI to make your profile pic 🪞- if the majority of your pictures are in a Hawaiian shirt or strappy dress clutching an Aperol Spritz you can use a number of applications to create slick, professional-looking pictures that won’t make future employers run a mile. Some have said they look a bit too overdone though, you but in the metaverse. Maybe that’s the real reality though.
Until next week!
